Positioned strategically between Garhwal and Kumaon, it witnessed ancient conflicts. In 1670, during the war, Baz Bahadur Chand seized the idol of Goddess Nanda Devi from Badhangarhi, later relocating it to Almora. A local tradition links the temple’s construction to G.W. Traill’s cure from snow-blindness, attributed to the Goddess’s curse
