Revised IMD outlook: dham districts out of the 16 Oct warning, Kedarnath dry 17–18 Oct, all four routes dry from 19 Oct
Follows up on 14 Oct
IMD Dehradun's later bulletin (14 Oct, 18:30 IST) sharpens the picture we flagged on 14 Oct: The hail and 40–50 km/h gust warning applied to 15 Oct. For 16 Oct the warning covers only Dehradun and Tehri; Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli still get rain/snow at a few places. Kedarnath (Rudraprayag): forecast dry on 17–18 Oct. Gangotri, Yamunotri (Uttarkashi) and Badrinath (Chamoli): isolated very light to light rain/snow on 17–18 Oct, with snow only at 3,800 m and above; no warnings. 19–20 Oct: dry statewide. Reports on 16 Oct said 15 Oct brought scattered rain and intermittent snowfall on the higher reaches, with temperatures falling. Winter closing dates for Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are still not officially announced; dates circulating online are unconfirmed, so check the temple committee's site. The last Kedarnath helicopter window (flights 16 Oct–9 Nov) is covered on our how-to-reach page.

Fresh IMD bulletin: hail warning holds for 15 Oct; Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli off the 16 Oct warning list
Follows up on 14 Oct
Following up our 14 Oct note: IMD Dehradun's district bulletin issued at 18:30 IST on 14 Oct keeps the 15 Oct thunderstorm warning with hail, lightning and 40–50 km/h gusts (isolated places) for Uttarkashi (Yamunotri, Gangotri), Rudraprayag (Kedarnath) and Chamoli (Badrinath). Uttarkashi is forecast to see rain or snow at many places today; Rudraprayag and Chamoli at a few places. Snow is possible from 3,500 m on 15–16 Oct. What changed: on 16 Oct none of the three dham districts carries a warning (it is now limited to Dehradun, Tehri and Nainital), though light to moderate rain or snow is still possible at a few places in Chamoli and Rudraprayag. On 17–18 Oct Rudraprayag is forecast dry, while Uttarkashi and Chamoli may see isolated light rain or snow (3,800 m and above); no warnings are listed. Winter closing dates are still not announced.

All four dham districts fall under IMD's 15 Oct thunderstorm warning; plan the high stretches for 14 or 16 Oct onwards
What changed: IMD Dehradun's 13 Oct evening bulletin adds a thunderstorm warning for 15 Oct, with hail, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 km/h at isolated places. The list includes Uttarkashi (Yamunotri, Gangotri), Rudraprayag (Kedarnath) and Chamoli (Badrinath), plus Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Haridwar on the approach roads. Light to moderate rain or snow is forecast at 3,500 m and above on 15–16 Oct, so the upper Kedarnath trek and the shrines themselves can turn cold and wet. Pilgrims with flexible plans should keep 15 Oct as a travel-light or rest day, start early on 16 Oct, and expect drier weather by 19 Oct, when IMD shows no rain in any district. Winter closing dates for the four dhams have still not been announced; we will add them here once the temple committees confirm.

Hemkund Sahib closes for winter after a record 3.84 lakh pilgrims
The portals of Sri Hemkund Sahib in Chamoli closed for the winter on 10 Oct. The final ardas was held around 12:30 pm and the hukamnama taken at 1 pm, as reported. The shrine logged 3,84,573 pilgrims in a season that began on 23 May, reported as a record (up from 3,52,765 in our 28 Sep entry). Snow fell at the shrine on 9 Oct and again shortly before the ceremony; Chamoli Police and SDRF helped pilgrims on the slippery climb from Ghangaria. What this means for you: the Hemkund Sahib trek is over for 2026. All four Char Dham shrines stay open, and their winter closing dates are still awaited. IMD's 10 Oct bulletin shows no weather warning for the state from 11 to 14 Oct.

Follows up on 28 Sept
The state government said on 7 Oct 2026 that 56,18,497 devotees have visited Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri so far this season. That passes the 2023 season and makes 2026 the busiest Char Dham year on record. That is about 2.95 lakh more than the 53,23,401 we logged on 28 Sep. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami credited the police, SDRF, health teams, local bodies and temple priests. A per-dham breakdown was not released with this figure, and the winter closing dates have still not been announced.

Badrinath crosses 18.67 lakh pilgrims, its highest season footfall so far
Badrinath Dham had received 18.67 lakh pilgrims by 5 October 2026, which reports describe as the shrine's highest-ever season footfall, with about 14,000 devotees on Sunday (4 Oct) alone. Officials expect the count could reach 20 lakh before the portals close. Reports also mention heavy traffic on the Badrinath National Highway between Karnaprayag and Badrinath; disaster-management teams in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi remain on alert. Winter closing dates for 2026 have not been announced yet. They are traditionally fixed on Vijayadashami (Dussehra); we will add them here once official.

Season total passes 53 lakh across the four dhams
By 28 September 2026 the four dhams together had recorded 53,23,401 pilgrims: Badrinath 18.10 lakh, Kedarnath 15.57 lakh, Gangotri 8.41 lakh (its highest ever) and Yamunotri 7.5 lakh. Hemkund Sahib crossed 3.5 lakh (3,52,765).
Char Dham Yatra status today
16 Oct 2026: the worst of this week's weather has passed for the dhams. IMD's latest bulletin keeps Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli out of the 16 Oct warning list, forecasts Kedarnath dry on 17–18 Oct and only light, isolated rain/snow near Gangotri, Yamunotri and Badrinath, and dry weather everywhere from 19 Oct. All four dhams remain open in a record season; Hemkund Sahib closed on 10 Oct. Winter closing dates are not yet officially announced, so pilgrims planning late October or November should keep checking the temple committee and the official registration portal. Carry warm layers: nights near the shrines are below freezing after the fresh snow.

Closing dates: what we know
The 2026 kapat-closing dates had not been announced when we checked on 8 Oct 2026. For reference, last year's dates were: Gangotri 22 Oct 2025, Kedarnath and Yamunotri 23 Oct 2025, and Badrinath 25 Nov 2025. This year's dates will differ, because they follow the Hindu calendar. If you are planning a late-October trip, keep your dates flexible until the official announcement.
Expect crowds The post-monsoon phase is busy, especially at Badrinath. Start road legs early and add buffer time on the Karnaprayag–Badrinath stretch.
Register first Register every traveller on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in before you leave and carry the registration on your phone and on paper.
Weather turns cold October nights at the dhams are cold, and the higher reaches can get early snow. See our weather alerts page.
Checklist for an October Char Dham trip
Yatra registration done for every traveller on the official portal
Government photo ID for each traveller
Warm layers, gloves and a cap; nights at the dhams are near freezing
Rain jacket; IMD expects scattered thunderstorms this week
Buffer day in the itinerary for traffic or landslide delays
Medicines you take regularly, plus a basic first-aid kit
Travelling in the last weeks of the season
October brings clear views but colder nights, and the high shrines can see early snow — Hemkund Sahib had its third snowfall of the season on 8–9 Oct. Pack thermals, a warm jacket and rain protection, and keep a buffer day in case of a weather or road hold-up. Once closing dates are announced, the last days before each closure usually draw heavy crowds. If you are planning a late-October trip, keep dates flexible until the temple committees confirm the schedule.
