History of Hemkund Sahib

The story  begins with the Dasam Granth, a religious scripture that recounts Guru Gobind Singh’s spiritual experiences. It mentions a high-altitude lake surrounded by seven snow-capped peaks where the Guru meditated in his previous life. The area lay forgotten for centuries until it was rediscovered by Sant Sohan Singh, a Sikh pilgrim, in the early 20th century.
In the late 1930s, Havaldar Mohan Singh, a soldier of the British Indian Army, rediscovered this place, following clues in the Dasam Granth. Later, in the 20th century, the place was re-established as Hemkund Sahib. In 1942, a Sikh architect, Sardar Modan Singh, constructed a gurdwara (Sikh temple) at the site, which stands as a place of worship and reflection for Sikh devotees.

Mythology About Hemkund Sahib

According to Sikh tradition, it is associated with Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. It is believed that Guru Gobind Singh, in his previous life as Guru Gobind Rai, meditated at Hemkund Sahib in his quest for spiritual enlightenment. The place was known as Lokpal, which means “keeper of the world.”
Another legend connected to Hemkund Sahib is related to the Dasam Granth, a religious scripture in Sikhism. It is said that Guru Gobind Singh, during his meditation at Hemkund Sahib, had an encounter with an ancient sage named Rishi Medhasa. The sage, upon recognizing Guru Gobind Singh as a spiritual master, tested his spiritual prowess and wisdom. Impressed by Guru Gobind Singh’s knowledge and devotion, Rishi Medhasa granted him blessings.
