IMD flags isolated thunderstorms and lightning for 5–7 Oct as the monsoon exits

IMD Dehradun's state bulletin issued on 4 Oct 2026 warns of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) at isolated places across Uttarakhand on 5, 6 and 7 October, with isolated to scattered light-to-moderate rain from 5 to 8 October. No warning is listed for 8 October. This comes right after the southwest monsoon withdrew from the remaining parts of north India on 3 October, so the pattern now is short afternoon storms rather than days of monsoon rain. Plan high-altitude walks and long drives for the morning.

Uttarakhand weather right now

16 Oct 2026: a western disturbance has brought rain, hail risk and fresh snow to the Uttarakhand hills. IMD's 14 Oct bulletin put six districts, including all three Garhwal dham districts and Pithoragarh, under a hail and gusty-wind warning for 15 Oct, with snow possible from 3,500 m on 15–16 Oct. The spell eases after that: only isolated light rain/snow in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh on 17–18 Oct, and dry weather statewide from 19 Oct. For travellers this means cold, wet mornings at Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, possible snow on high treks such as Adi Kailash and Om Parvat, and slippery stretches on hill roads. Carry warm layers and rain gear, start early, and check the road status page before each driving day.

What this means for your trip

Char Dham pilgrims Do the Kedarnath and Yamunotri walks early and aim to be off the exposed upper sections by early afternoon, when isolated storms are most likely. Keep a rain shell in your day bag.
Trekkers Plan summit or pass pushes for dawn. Lightning is the main risk on ridges and open bugyals. If a storm builds, drop down and wait it out.
Road travel Even short showers can loosen stones on cut slopes. Avoid driving after dark on hill roads and check our road status page before you set off.

Weather checklist before you leave

Read the latest IMD Dehradun bulletin the evening before
Start walks and drives early; plan to be off ridges by afternoon
Pack a waterproof jacket and warm layers; nights at the shrines are cold
Keep phone and power bank charged; network is patchy in the high valleys
Check the road status page for blockages on your route
Keep a buffer day in your itinerary for weather delays
