Gaumukh Trek

Gaumukh Trek

The Gaumukh Trek is a popular trekking route located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a challenging trek that takes you to the source of the Ganges River at the Gaumukh Glacier, which is located at an altitude of 13,200 feet (4,023 meters).

The trek starts from Gangotri, which is a small town situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The trail takes you through dense forests, alpine meadows, and rocky terrain, with stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

The trek is usually done over a period of 6-7 days, covering a distance of approximately 18-20 kilometers each way. Along the way, you will pass through several small villages and campsites, including Chirbasa, Bhojbasa, and Tapovan.

The highlight of the trek is reaching the Gaumukh Glacier, which is a massive ice formation that resembles a cow’s mouth, hence the name “Gaumukh.” The glacier is also considered a holy site by Hindus, as it is the source of the Ganges River, which is considered a sacred river in India.

Overall, the Gaumukh Trek is a challenging but rewarding trek that offers stunning views of the Himalayas and an opportunity to visit a sacred site. It is recommended for experienced trekkers who are physically fit and prepared for high-altitude trekking.
