The primary objectives were flood control, irrigation, and the generation of hydroelectric power. The project aimed to harness the water resources of the Bhagirathi and its tributaries.

Project Approval and Construction (1972-2006): The Tehri Dam Project received approval in 1972, and construction began in 1978.Despite these challenges, construction continued, and the dam was completed in 2006.

Formation of Tehri Reservoir: As the dam was completed, the Tehri Reservoir began to fill, submerging the town of Tehri and several villages in the process. The reservoir is formed by impounding the waters of the Bhagirathi and its tributaries, creating a massive water body.
