Mythology About Surkanda Devi Temple

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, also known as Surkanda Devi. According to Hindu mythology, Surkanda Devi is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga.Surkanda Devi Temple is the story of Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva. It is said that her father, Daksha, once organized a grand yajna (sacrificial ritual) but didn’t invite Shiva due to his disdain for him. Despite Shiva’s warnings, Sati went to the yajna, where Daksha insulted Shiva. Unable to bear the humiliation, Sati immolated herself. Enraged, Shiva carried her burnt body and began his cosmic dance of destruction, the Tandava. To stop him from destroying the universe, Lord Vishnu intervened and dismembered Sati’s body, and her various body parts fell at different places across the Indian subcontinent. It is said that her head fell at the spot where the Surkanda Devi Temple stands today, thus making it a significant pilgrimage site.

The Surkanda Devi Temple is visited by devotees throughout the year, but especially during the ‘Ganga Dussehra’ festival when a large fair is organized here. The temple’s location amidst the serene Himalayan mountains offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and peaks, adding to its spiritual aura and allure.
